I just took a vacation in order to volunteer at Best Friends, and I have to say that it was one of the most amazing experiences in my life. I'll go back often. You know how you feel at some shelters, just sad and sick at your stomach, knowing how many animals won't leave the shelter gates? Best Friends is not that! On over 33,000 acres (yes, that's thirty-three THOUSAND!), Best Friends rescues and rehabilitates over 1500 animals, including dogs, cats, horses, parrots, pigs, horses, and bunnies. In addition to rescuing and rehabilitating the Vicktory Dogs - a much more positive name than "the Michael Vick dogs" - they rescued over 4,000 animals during hurricane Katrina, 748 cats in Pahrump, Nevada, 116 dogs in Missouri saved from puppy-farm-breeding auctions, among others. They also mounted rescue efforts in Lebanon (yes, the middle eastern country), during the Israeli-Lebanon war last summer, and just a month or so ago in Mexico during massive flooding. Even though Best Friends does an astounding job in caring for pets, adopting them out, supporting other shelters, etc., they still need your help. Plan your next get-away, if even for a few days, to beautiful Kanab, Utah. In fact, you can get a travel package that includes a trip to the Grand Canyon as part of your journey.Click here for more info.news.bestfriends.org/index.cfm And while you're there, don't forget to take one of the pets for a "sleepover." You can take a dog or a cat to spend the night with you in your hotel. It's fun for both you and the dog, but it's even more than that. You're asked to complete an evaluation of the pet. The more the pet is socialized, and the more details you can share about their temperment and habits, the more adoptable they are! I hope to see you there! |
