Does anyone know of a good car harness for dogs?  I'm looking for one that is lightweight but strong, attaches to the seatbelt but allows the dog to move about.  I picked up on last year but it was too heavy and the dog didn't like wearing it.

My dog is a Shih Tzu (translate, very short so can't see out of the window), so I ordered him a pet seat last year from Drs. Foster & Smith.  The harness in the seat attaches to his harness and the seat belt and moves enough that he can get out of the seat if he wants and lay on the car seat.  He seems to like it and I know that if I stop quick, he won't go flying across the car.

I have the same seat for my Shih Tzu and she loves it. Jumps right up and waits to be buckled in. She's the queen of all she surveys!

I have a very simple strap seat belt strap from PetsMart loops around the seat belt and then clips onto my dog's harness. It works beautifully. I keeps him from falling off the seat if I stop suddenly. It also keeps him in the car, because twice now he's tried to jump out the window when I was driving pretty fast!

Long before I got a dog I'd heard someone on Oprah say that all dogs should be harnessed when in cars. I'd never thought of that. Growing up my parents didn't even make sure we kids had seatbelts on! I try to spread the word to other dog owners who don't harness their dogs to the seatbelt.

I use a regular harness and I have a leash that has a fold away seatbelt attachment on it. You can use the lease regularly or just leave in the car at all times. The seatbelt attachment is just like what the car seatbelts have on them. I bought all these items at PetSmart. I've found it great to have this always left in my car in cases like finding a stray dog (which I've had to use for a time or two before).
