I have a senior pointer who breaks open a sore on the tip of his tail whenever he wags enthusiastically (read, very often!).

Polling you guys for ideas for wrapping a tail that actually stay on.

Lab - have you tried gauze & vet wrap?  I love vet wrap - stick to itself and comes in a multitude of colors.  Just be sure not to wrap too tight.

Is this a open sore that has to drain and dry out?  Then I wouldn't necisarrily wrap it tho.

This is a recurring skin break.  Pesky, messy, difficult to heal.  We'll go for a couple months no problem, then back to square one.  Maybe it's a pointer thing?  Or once a tail issue, always a tail issue.

Not sure I want the moist gauze on it, but the vet wrap sounds good, if I can keep him from messing with it.

Lab - I'd put some gauze around the wound first  (as the actual bandage).  Vet wrap is kind of plasticy (if thats a word) and will just help keep the gauze in place.

Worth a try - thanks for the imput.  Might help with wall splatters, and coudn't hurt the wound either.

Bleeding tail wounds are some of the most frustrating and persistant sores a dog can have. We used to put a non-stinging septic type powder on them, wrap them with gauze, then a layer of vet wrap, and finally some elasticon tape over the whole thing. Some were able to heal but if the pup is a constant wagger and breaks it open despite our best efforts, then we've had to resort to amputation in some of the most severe cases. It may seem drastic, but the wound will finally be gone and the soreness and risk of infection are aleviated.

We tried for 2 months to bandage and heal our pointer's tail.  Finally had to amputate to about 3 inches.  It was bad for a couple of weeks with the lampshade on him and he was in pain to begin with.  After that everything went to normal and he is fine without the tail and we have no more bleeding from the sore.

I appreciate all the suggestions. At the moment the wound is closed and healed. Crossing fingers it lasts for a while......
