My 8-yr.-old lab eats grass - lots of it.  When we go for a walk, she grazes her way around the block!  I always believed dogs ate grass to calm their stomachs, but she does it all the time.  She has a healthy appitite, & she isn't vomiting,  & doesn't seem to be in any distress.  Could there be something missing from her diet, or is she part cow?

Hi Debbie,

My 2 dogs love grass.... I call them my living lawn mowers..... they very seldom get sick from eating grass.... I do allow them to eat grass in my back yard, but only in my back yard. The reason being is, I only fertilize my yard with a natural organic fertilizer. I have never used chemical fertilizers on my lawn....I think my beasts like the taste of grass, they certainly arn't eating it because they are hungry.

Hello! My rottie, Othello, goes to the barn with me all the time and loves to indulge in grass, hay, & even horse manure (yuk!). It's never hurt him and although he sometimes vomits it up, it doesn't slow him down or bother him at all. I figure he's trying to fit in with the horses...monkey see, monkey do! LOL

My Rottie eats grass also, but I have to say he's very picky about which kind of grass he eats. I have no idea what the difference is but he sure does. He doesnt really eat alot, I guess because there isnt alot of the type of grass he likes. He also likes to eat other dog poo  which drives me crazy cause its hard to enjoy a nice walk when you have to keep an eye on the grass for any poo he might grab!

I believe that eating feces sometimes means that the animal has a nutritional deficiency. I would definately mention this to your vet.

this is really gross...nasty...but i think my dogs are worse then any here.

i have 3 boxers. all are fed a really good food...but when ever they go out in the yard...they love to eat the grass. ok...not so gross..but when one has to poo...there is one  in the group that eats the poo!! i've asked the vet about it and they said it isn't going to hurt them...just annoy me!

grass is suppose to be good for dogs. this is what the wild dogs ate...

i just know that if i don't use the trimmer to cut down the really long grass in the yard...the dogs have a feast!!

You're not alone!  My doggie used to eat his poo as well.  So gross...!    In the end I had to try to pick it up before he got a chance for an afternoon snack!

My two current dogs don't eat poo thankfully.  But they do love grass.  Especially when we go for our morning walk and it's all dewey.  They love it...!

My 12 yr old GSP also eats grass. She has for years. And yes she too is picky about the kind of grass but don't ask me cause I can't tell the difference. It's never made her sick and I only let her do it at home where I know there's no chemicals. I know my cats love and need to eat grass. But for dogs is it the same reason, for digestion? I'd love to know the answer to this one too.

Blackberry loves grass.  I think it might be since he was brought here from Kentucky to be adopted, he might miss "The Bluegrass State." haha!!

Or is that just the explanation as to why he has a southern bark?

Anyway, like many have mentioned here, he also picks out certain patches of grass that he likes to eat, and others he will not touch.  I think the more wild patches are more to his liking.  He also likes to eat the leaves of the bluebell plant growing wild in a neighbor's yard.
