So I got a new pet mouse  a couple days ago (my first one) and the cage got set up wrong so she got out within like tens mins of being in the cage. She dissapeared for about 5 days but I finally found her yesterday. Since she never really had time to get to know me do you think this is going to set her back from getting to know me? Everytime I put my hand in the cage to feed her she runs away. Do you have any suggestions on how to bond with her better? I can't even get her out of the cage (she runs to the places where I can't reach her).

ho there

I don't think her having gotten out should hurt the process at all, execpt maybe a bit if she got very hungry. But only a bit.

Some critters can take a while to socialize, esp these lil rodent types(I have 2 rats).  It may take patience.  Start by putting something in your cage that smells of you.  Keep talking to her gently, put your hand in the cage near her, but try to make it clear you won't move in on her.  Slowly build your way up-poke out a finger, she'll be scared. One day she'll sniff.  Keep on going with that until she starts smelling more of your hand.

(you prob know this but in case you don't, never let her smell your hand if it smells of food, or she'll try to nibble, you'll yelp, she'll get scared...what a mess).

Keep moving slowly, talking to her lots, giving her many oppertunities throughout the day to be near your hand, sniff it....logical steps and patience, and in a while she'll come right into your hand and never want to leave!

what kind of cage do you have?

Its now been three weeks and something really weird has happened. When we try to clean her cage we try to put her in a box and then put her in the little ball that lets her roll around. Well the moment we put her in there all she will do is pee and poop in it and she doesn't even want to roll around in it. She still is deathly afraid of me. She bites me when I try to put my hand in to see if she'll even approach it. And whats even weirder is (i have like a plastic cage that comes with the whole caboodle...water, wheel, split levels, tunnel, etc.) well when we go to put her back in her cage theres an opening at the top (thats where we transfer all the food into and stuff). So once we close the lid she will throw herself up with all of her might towards the lid to try to open it. She literally did it for about two hours straight just trying every possible way she could to try to get out. I don't understand why she hates her cage so much and she just wants to get out. I'm afraid shes going to hurt herself if she keeps throwing her entire body at the top of the cage and then falling back down. I don't know what to do!

I have a rat that I raised from a wee little thing. She used to do the same thing when I had to put her in a small, travel-sized cage to change her big cage. She hated that thing. So, I eventually started letting her run loose in my bathroom while I changed her cage. Big difference. She loved it. So that's our regular routine now. Do you feel comfortable letting your mouse play in your bathroom? You may have to block the doorway with something so she can't scoot under it. If so, you might could even sit in there with her from time to time and let her get to know you better that way.
