Dawn Yawning

Dogs are so amazing - is it any wonder they're our best friends? A new study shows that, like humans, dogs are susceptible to catching a yawn, too! How cute is that?

"Dogs watching a person yawn repeatedly will yawn themselves, says Atsushi Senju of Birkbeck, University of London. Just as that big jaw-stretch spreads contagiously from person to person, it spreads from person to dog, he and his colleagues report in an upcoming Biology Letters."

Re: Awww, Big Yawn!

I believe this is true. My husband and I will yawn and sure enough our black lab will be the next one. We've also noticed when we are relaxing if we take a long deep breath he will do the same. It goes full circle. That's when you know your a family, everyone does the same thing. It's cute.

Of course; aren't they human? It is just a natural action that we all participate in. Quigley does it all the time; sometimes from boredom too. It is adorable to watch him and then he shakes his head.

My CAT, Hannity will yawn if he sees me yawn. It works for cats too.

Re: Awww, Big Yawn!

Our dog Baron yawns all the time....and some of the other noises that come out of him are hilarious. When he is bored, he sighs and when he is totally annoyed with me or my husband he makes this deep heavy sigh....and then turns his back to us. He is quite a character.

Re: Awww, Big Yawn!

Since my 3 were puppies, everytime they would yawn we would make a big deal out of it and tell them "big yawn!!" Now, they litterally have yawning competitions between the three of them. The bigger and noisier the yawn, the more attentiont hey get from us. They do the same for stretching. Oh the wonders of what we can teach our little rascals!!

Re: Awww, Big Yawn!

Now see..its funny I always noticed my mom's dogs (west highland terriers) yawning when they seemed stressed, like after being yelled at for doing a no no on the floor..all have to examine this behaviour more now. Great article and love the picture, so cute!!

Re: Awww, Big Yawn!

Our dog yawns, of course, and our 2 cats yawn a LOT. None copy us, though. (I don't yawn very much anyway.) But I know Zoey, our dog, also yawns when someone looks at her after she's gotten into mischief, kind of nervous-like. I don't have any idea why because we never get upset with her, just think she's adorable. Does she have a conscience?

Re: Awww, Big Yawn!

I was just reading a book by Turid Rugaas called "On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals" and she explains that yawning is a way that dogs communicate to other dogs and people to calm them down. One dog will do it and others will copy it. She says dogs do this in times of stress. She also recommends that people yawn on purpose to help their dog feel more calm when they're stressed.

Re: Awww, Big Yawn!

We don't have a dog to test the theory on, but our 2 cats, Bill & Ted, yawn ALOT!
