Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
While my dogs mean the world to me I don't see this as the kind of issue that would influence my decision on who to vote for as president. On a local level I would feel differently but the war and the economy are the issues that will decide who I vote for in Nov.

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
I don't think this would be the determining factor for my vote either, but I can't help but believe a person who loves animals and has many pets must have a good, good heart and it definitely does mean something to me. John McCAin has always srtuck me as a man of tremendous character and now I know he must have a very big heart. My husband has a huge heart and still would have issues with eleven or twelve pets. I do have six (four dogs, two horses), though. I do pray Senator Obama and family will adopt a shelter dog after the election (I heard they are going to get a dog). I hope no matter if he wins or not, his family will consider adoption of shelter dog. This would be an excellent example for others to do the same. I have four now, and two that have passed on. Rescuing an animal from a shelter is the most wonderful feeling and somehow you can sense how much they appreciate you and love you for it. There are many pure bred dogs and cats there too if that is important to you.

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
My four kitties and I will not be voting for McCain. Ignore the soundbites. Check our his voting record in the senate - look at the issues of concern to you - THEN decide. He's not the environmental guy he wants you to think he is (see League of Conservation Voters for more on this). He's also not as pro-vet as he'd have you believe. Again LOOK at his voting record...don't just swallow what you hear in the media whole. Do the same with Obama.
As for the pet issue...The Obamas live in an urban environment where (due to his job) the father is gone a great deal of the time. Michelle Obama is a working mother raising two adorable and intelligent girls. Remember, these are relatively young people. I actually admire them for NOT bringing a pet into lives that hectic. Having a pet is something you must have time for - especially a dog. The fact that they realize that they cannot commit that kind of time and attention at this point in their lives is admirable. Pets aren't trophies or decorations. They are family members. When they move to the White House this situation will likely change.

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
This doesn't have anything to do with picking a president! I don't care if McCain owned the Australia Zoo, I'm voting for Senator Obama. We need a change and won't get it with McCain, he is too old. He doesn't have fresh ideas and an active mind.
I'm not a dog person much, but I know that Senator Obama is allergic to a lot of dogs. He needs to pick a certain type of dog as a pet. He is waiting for the campaign to be over with so the animal won't have so much stress to deal with.
That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
While pet ownership, in my mind, shows a compassion for those other than oneself - especially those that cannot speak for themselves - that won't affect my vote. I would sooner vote for a rabid dog, however, than for Barack Hussein Obama. I don't like racists of any color and the old "birds of a feather' tends to fit here, in my opinion (Farrakhan, Wright, etc.).
Someone said to check McCain's voting record - hey at least he HAS one. And as to fresh ideas - age has nothing to do with it. While Obama may espouse fresh ideas - his actions speak of old politics, pure and simple.
While McCain isn't my first choice, he's the only one left I'd vote for.

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
I think responsible pet ownership begins with knowing when you are ready to add a new family member (dog) and when you are not. Obama seems very responsible in his decision. When they are ready, they are ready, ya know?
Besides, I don't trust anyone who "owns" 12 dogs. UGH, hoarder comes to mind.
Dog ownership/guardianship isn't influencing me. As a former Hillary supporter I am basing my vote for Obama on the sole fact that he isn't another OLD white haired Neocon. Nuff for me :)

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
I'm interested in knowing how he feels about and treats his dogs. Personally, I believe that anyone that loves animals and treats them well, cannot be a bad person. I'm not sure it would convince me to vote for anyone for President, based on that alone. It sure would be a nudge in that direction if I was undecided..........

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
I think the issue is not whether he has pets but whether he cares about the environment and its inhabitants in general. Washington policies do not just affect us humans but have irreversible repercussions for our natural habitat and environment. For me the deciding factor is not whether the candidate has a pets (they could all have been bought at pet stores and come from horrific puppy mills) but what his record is regarding environmental (NOT FOR PROFIT) issues. As such, Republicans have a dismal and shameful record ..........I think it is clear as a bell!!

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
Well, since everyone is going political on this, I'll jump back in. I've always been a democrat and I was for Hillary, but now, I will vote McCain. I can't vote for Obama with his little experience. I don't think he is evil or anything of that nature, but I do believe he needs to get more experience before running for president. But back to the pets, I didn't know animals were allowed to vote, but since SEKKIM's five cats are voting for Obama, I guess I'll have to try to persuade my four dogs to vote McCain. I know two will be easy to win over, but I have two that are pretty liberal and I'm not sure about them. I'll have to be sure to read all these blogs to them and let them decide on their own. Heck, my own kids don't even vote the way I do all the time so who knows about my dogs. My dogs actually adore cats (so SEKKIM's may be pretty influential), so I have no idea who they will vote for. Maybe I'll threaten to withhold the pupperonie's on election day. Won't it be interesting in November??? And remember, "God bless America." I still love them anyway, though.

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
I think the reason more pet owners favor McCain is stability. Obama seems to appeal to younger people who don't have any roots or world experience. Pet owners are more home centered. There are many personal things about McCain that he will not make public, such as adopting a child that Mother Teresa asked his wife Cindy to take back to the U.S. to get medical care or she would die. Cindy would not leave without the child and then they adopted her. They have children who have served in Iraq, so not only has he been a POW but he knows what it's like to have your own children in the military. I did not favor him at first, but long before any primary elections, Katie Couric asked each candidate what they feared losing the most, and they could not say "health" or "family." John McCain gave the best answer and the only one who said, "My Country." That told me a lot about his character and that of the other candidates because no one else put country first. Another reason I think pet owners favor McCain is the pro-life issue. I find it hard to believe that people who want to rescue and save animals would also want to kill the unborn. McCain's answer about "country" is what has made me support him. I don't think Obama is concerned with anyone but promoting himself.

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
McCain may be a brave man. He may be an animal lover. Are those really the issues in the forefront of this year's election? What a ridiculous poll. The war has bankrupt us. Animals are being abandoned due to people's inability to afford them; people are dying in a futile war; homes are being foreclosed upon and again pets being abandoned to the shelters; the environoment is in the midst of being destroyed more than it has over the past 7 and a half years under the Bush Administration's control. Off shore drilling is a real possibility resulting in how much more destruction to the mammals who will lost their habitat. Having 12 pets does not make one qualified to be president. This is not supposed to be a political forum but it's hard to keeep one's mouth shut after reading such an inane conclousion that pet lovers will vote for MCain. I totally agree with the above post: Republicans are bad for this country.

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
Has no one thought about the geography involved in Senator McCain's animal owernship? He is, after all, in Washington DC for the majority of his time as a senator. While his wife and children remain at home in Arizona. So, I would say that all the people who plan on voting for Senator McCain based on all the animals that reside at his Arizona home are failing to consider all the facts.

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
With the economy going down and the war issue it would make it very difficult for me to vote for McCain. During these kind of times many people give up their pets because they can't afford them or more likely not to seek vet care for them and skip on quality pet food. So even though his heart is good with his own pets I need to think about the nation's pets and how they are affected by a big expensive totally unecessary war and the downhil economy due to greed from the big oil companies.

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
McCain is not top dog for me, he is a clone of Bush & Bush has pets but he has destroyed our country. Bush is not concerned over what is best for our country or our people. Bush lives in a cave or under a rock somewhere, his statement " I didn't hear anything about the price of gas going up to 4.00" .

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
I don't think animal ownership has anything to do with who should be president. As someone else said, Bush has dogs but look at what he has done to our country. McCain has a very poor environmental record as well as being anti women's rights and not being very supportive of returning military people. As the bumper sticker says: "Bush's third Term: McCain"

I will vote for Senator Obama with no reservations whatsoever, and I am closer to retirement age than my teens! If the dog question is important to you, the Obamas said in the TV interview with their girls that, win or lose, they get a dog when the election is over. The girls were very excited.

While McCain is on the road someone else has to take care of his animals, so if you are really busy not having a pet may be for the best. And that does not affect who I would vote for. Some people have hobbies instead of pets.

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
That Obama's family is getting a dog has nothing to do with my fear of him. I have voted democratic for many years, I will soon be 60. This man in the White House would be a mistake. But I don't really believe McClain has the poor or middle class at heart either. There are shelter animals in my home and all are rescues. They energize my life and keep me whole! I love all 4, 2 cats, 2 dogs.

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
I can't believe that someone would not vote for Obama because of his name!?!!!! He did not choose his name! Would you not like or pet a dog that was named "Dummy" or " Kitty Cat"? That is just ridiculous. I appreciate the fact that McCain is a pet owner. I also appreciate the fact that the Obama family has been too busy as of yet to give a dog a good home with lots of love and attention. They are making a PLAN to get a dog and that is wonderful. And you don't have to have a pet to believe in animal rights any more than you have to have children to want your city to provide a good schools. After what we have been through with Republicans in the White House - I can't imagine anything worse than another Republican presidency. Having said that I respect the fact that McCain was a POW. My dad was in Vietnam too. I think McCain is a good man, but I am definitely voting for Obama, Do I wish that he had more experience - Yes. ( I thought Hilary was actually the one with the best experience - having lived and been side by side the president IN the White House and watching her husband's mistakes and milestones - she learned things that no other candidate had ever had the opportunity to.) But this country needs a positive change and I think Obama will give us that. I think we will see his kids playing on the White House lawn with (hopefully like my 2 "Katrina" babies) a rescued dog!

Re: Is McCain Top Dog?
Considering pet ownership for casting a vote for any politician I would first have to ask about the quality of care given to those pets, after all there have fairly recently been very public instances of ownership yet less than responsible owners. And, if one loves animals shouldn't that include wildlife? If so care of the environment is vastly important for the survival of all life, human included. I feel it will be most important to investigate records/positions on all the issues. Personally I'm not very sold on either of the major choices but I sure don't believe the wildlife and environment (land.sea or sky) can survive the experience of another eight years like the past eight. There are so very many species that have been driven to the brink of extinction by habitat/environmental destruction all for the love of the almighty dollar, totally disregarding even thier own scientists.

Considering the options we have or don't have.....personally I DON"T want The President of the United States with the middle name of Hussein! Mr McCain, with his love for animals and his service and sacrifice to this country would be more open to the conserns we all have for animal safety, treatment and protection!! And a much more honorable and compassionate leader this country desparately needs!
