| Jul 18 Written by:aajoanne Friday, July 18, 2008 In preparation for the Olympics, it seems like China is really cracking down on their -- somewhat bizarre - laws to put their best face forward. The latest news is that large breed dogs are being rounded up and impounded! Poor babies!"AS DARKNESS falls over Beijing, dog owners such as Deng Xiaozhi nervously leave their homes with pets in tow for a walk or run in parks, safe in the knowledge that the city's dog catchers have clocked off.
A Beijing law making it illegal to keep dogs taller than 35cm means that dogs such as Mr Deng's placid golden retriever are outlaws and can be impounded and put down if they are caught by the authorities." Read the Article >> Tags: 23 comments so far...

Horrible! But what do you expect from a country with such atrocious human rights violations and the imprisonment and torture of Christians and other people they consider a threat/

Re: Big Dog Ban
Just when I thought China couldn't get any crueler or more stupid, this comes up. I realize there are good people in China. But from everything I've read and their track record on human and animal cruelty, not to mention their safety regulations on animal food, plastics and toys. Their whole government and most of their population could drop off the planet and it would be a good thing. Sounds awful I know, but the level of insanity over there just keeps getting higher. And yes I know a lot of our western countries have a long way to go too. But China, OMG! So if a pet is over 35 cm, there's your supper. WT*!!??

Re: Big Dog Ban
Why on earth the olympic committee chose to allow a country with a horrible human rights record (Tibet, Darfur) host the olympics i will never understand. It is no surprise they have no regard for animals either. It is time for the world to stand up and boycott products made in china.

Re: Big Dog Ban
Well as with everything else in China they have no compassion or regard for anything, I think we should be boycotting the Olympics this year rather then send a message that we think the way they treat people animals and the environment is okay. Americans need to stand up and show some damn backbone, get the damn Republican idiots out of office who are just as bad as far as animal rights and the environment and war!! Wake up people!!!!

Re: Big Dog Ban
This is only one of the many atrocities against humans and animals, which happen very often in China. The world must not forget their safety violations on toys, pet food, plastics, etc. In addition, China is one of the biggest buyers of Canadian baby seal fur. I refuse to buy anything Made in China, and I make sure to let the store manager know that I will not spend my money on those products. Stand up and boycott products Made in China.

Re: Big Dog Ban
Why the hell are we supporting a country with such a horrible record regarding life, human and animal, by allowing them to host the Olympics?! Shouldn't we support countries that actually have good records? This is ridiculous! Personally, I usually LOVE the Olympics, but I cannot watch it this year, after readings about the horrible atrocities that have been carried out, just to make their country what they deem "presentable".

Re: Big Dog Ban
Unfortunately this what one has come to expect from China. Yet they were awarded the Olympics. I still don't understand why. They do not deserved to be rewarded. They deserve to ostracized.

Re: Big Dog Ban in China plus
Oddly enough I have been trying to promote a friends petition against a horrendous crime taken place on animals in China. We have gained 1500 signatues in the last two weeks. WSPA now has an animal rights activity center in Beijang for the first time. They are working on this one too.
Here is the site. http://thepetitionsite.com/2/stop-the-cat-cutters

Re: Big Dog Ban
I believe that China is trying to appease the western world and they don't have a clue! After all, they are taking dog off of the menu for us. I don't have a word to describe what I feel about their treatment of these special creatures. At least not one I care to put into print here.

MAYBE THE RICE GLUTEN INCIDENT WASN'T A MISTAKE AFTER ALL. KEEP YOUR EYE ON WHAT YOUR FEEDING. MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T COME FROM THERE. TRY SOME OF THE RAW DIETS SUCHS AS NATURE'S VARIETY, FARMORE, RAW ADVANTAGE. OR STICK WITH THE GRAIN FREE'S SUCH AS INNOVA" EVO,"NATURE'S VARIETY" INSTINCT," OR TASTE OF THE WILD.THESE ARE AVAILABLE IN KIBBLE AND CAN EXCEPT FOR THE T.O.W. WHICH IS AVAILABLE IN KIBBLE. CHINA SOUNDS LIKE AUSHWITZ FOR DOGS. WHAT A BUNCH OF INGNORANT PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE.

Re: Big Dog Ban
I AM boycotting the Olympics and all products made in China. I will boycott China until they start treating their dogs and cats humanely and stops eating them too. I will boycott China until they stop buying animal skins and body parts from other countries too.

Re: Big Dog Ban
I don't think you can boycott China except fresh food. What was the last item you picked up that wasn't manufactured in China. China owns our free-trade market and has for a very long time! If you you want a different perspective and a new choice, vote for Obama.

Re: Big Dog Ban
Over there they eat dogs. It is one of there many dishes. I think it is sick. Maybe that is where they are going. And I think anyone who takes someone's dog away for it's size is crazy. We have an 85 lb rescue. And she is a big kitten.

Re: Big Dog Ban
Truly amazing how a huge consensus among major countries has been built to llook the other way regarding China's actions to consume Tibet, destroy its faith and threaten to kill its religious leaders while athletes compete in a spirit of "goodwill." Would have been interesting to see what could have happened if the athletes themselves had stood up against the Olympic committee's decision to allow China to host. Truly I would not want to penaliize someone who has worked most of their lives for this yet I'm curious as to why no comments from them aside from that they shouldn't be penalized. It's called doing the right thing! Much can be learned about a society when viewing how they treat the dependent members of their society.

Re: Big Dog Ban
I recently signed a petition launched by the Alley Cat Allies organization in attempt stop China from rounding up and euthanizing stray/feral cats in Bejing in preparation for the Olympics. Another complete crock! What does that country think? That no other countries have big dogs and stray cats on their streets? Like we'd all be appalled to see such sights when we go there? I would personally be somewhat distrusting of such a sterile city environment. What else are they hiding? I don't go in for Chinese medicine either, even though some of it is good, simply for the reason that some of the medicines encourage poaching of threatened and endangered species like black rhino horn. ASIDE FROM THE MANY IMPORTED PRODUCTS MADE IN CHINA THAT WE'RE FAMILIAR WITH, PLEASE NOTE THAT CHINA IS ALSO OUR #1 APPAREL IMPORTER TO THE USA. WATCH YOUR CLOTHING LABELS!
