Dog TransportsPeople not in animal rescue are largely unaware of the "underground railroad" that moves animals across the country from shelters to foster homes, and from foster homes to forever homes.

A transport divides the route from beginning to end into roughly 60 mile segments. Each volunteer takes a leg (sometimes more) and moves the dog closer to their destination. Other times you find someone traveling the whole distance willing to take the pup along. Sometimes truckers are able to assist in moving dogs, and on rare occasions there are several pilots organizations willing to fly dogs for us. It is an incredible network of dog lovers working to make a difference in one dogs life.

Gas prices and the economy are impacting our ability to move dogs. And try as we may the closest foster home may not be in the next town over, or even the next state. Where a transport used to move one dog, now we try to move one or more, multiple rescue organizations teaming up to make the best use of transport volunteers.

If Ghost, our next foster dog, had opposable thumbs he'd be standing on the roadside thumb out to hitch a ride north to Omaha. His thumb would be pretty tired as he's been waiting for two months for his ride to get here. He doesn't know this is why he's still stuck in a small rural shelter. But I do, and it's frustrates the heck out of me. I wish I could whisper in his ear and tell him not to worry, we are working for him, his second chance is coming soon. Soon, Ghost, soon.

So if you can help, or know someone who can help, or know someone who might know someone in the area who could help please let me know. Oklahoma is so close and yet so far, and Ghost needs a second chance.

Many animals need a second chance and helping with a transport is one way you can make a difference. Let's step forward and make some tails wag. The difference that animal makes in someone's life down the road will make all the difference in the world.

You can have a part in that.

Re: Transports

What a wonderful thing to do! I wish there was something I could do to help. Is there somewhere we could go to donate gas money to help Ghost and other kids like him or her get to the loving homes they deserve so much!! Thank you for caring!!

Re: Transports

katseyes - Ghost is being moved by Pointer Rescue, our website is www..pointerrescue.org

I am certain I can speak for all rescue organizations - we always need good volunteers, great foster homes, and donations always graciously accepted.

Some links/ways to help transports

For those who are interested in animal transport - I applaud you. I have been doing animal rescue transports for a few years and it is VERY rewarding. There are many rescue sites and mailing lists that regularly post runs and segments that need help. If anyone has questions about this I'm happy to help answer any I can. My name is Kathy and my e-mail is petnannytopeka@sbcglobal.net. Anyway, I'll post websites and transport mailing lists I am a member of or have done rescue transport for. (foster homes are often in desperate need as well) PLEASE help if you can.

Re: Transports

Hi
I learned of the "underground" last year in Sept, when I became stranded with my two fur babies in VA. It didnt work out but I learned so much.
I am available AFTER 8-16-08 for 60-70 mile trips! I am in Alpine Texas, it is in Brewster County.
I can be reached at AlpineSpearit@gmail.com

PLEASE feel free to contact me regarding this at any time!
I was helped by a true Angel from WA in getting my dogs back to TX. I say true Angel because the lady who rescued my "kids" passed in April at 49 years old and I would be MORE than happy to help anyone in saving a pet, in memory of my Angel lady!!!!

Re: Transports

I am amazed to find out this is going on. I didn't know about this underground transport. This is so awesome to know that people are this dedicated to the second chances for dogs. Cheers to all of you have done this and will do this in the future. Glad to see there will be more people to help on finding this out.

Re: Transports

Hay there I'm in Saint Joseph, Missouri about 60 miles North of Kansas City, about that maybe a liitle more to Omaha, NB If someone needs help getting someone someplace just give me a shout.
A group that I belong to here does this but that is all that I can say about it and if you all knew it would make you proud.
Don't care what kind of critters ya got either, bring them on.

Re: Transports

The dog world is full of wonderful people. It is great to see so many willing to move dogs where they need to go. We are still trying to fill Ghost's transport. We are particularly short of legs in Kansas. Anyone interested in seeing the transport route - please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you.

Re: Transports

I just wanted to say that I have transported several animals across LA,TN, and MS, and it is one of the most rewarding experiences. You may not have the animals in your care for long, but transporters are an intrical part of saving these precious lives that may not have a chance if you weren't there.

To all transporters. Thank you for saving a life.

Re: Transports

to Angryfish.

I work with a group out of West Monroe, LA. We are always looking for people willing to help transport in the Dallas area. If yopu would like, I can get you in touch with the rescue coordinater with PAWS of NELA. They pull animals out of shelters and get them into rescue groups to find them forever homes. Usually they meet you and pass the pets off to get the aniamls across the country depending on where the rescue group is located.
