| Jul 13 Written by:aajoanne Sunday, July 13, 2008 Thanks to member Labdp for her contributions to our blog! I am fairly certain some of my neighbors consider me a "crazy dog lady". I'm sure they mean that in the nicest possible way.
Some of my favorite people are crazy dog people. Some of these favorite people are friends I have never actually met. I have a friend who chained herself to a dog house on Mission Beach in San Diego, near the Wavehouse and Canes. She was there from July 4-6th.
While you and I were working, going about our business, celebrating the 4th of July, Kelly was chained to a dog house. The epitome of craziness??? No, actually, the dedication of an animal advocate. She participated in the Dogs Deserve Better Annual Chain Off (www.dogsdeservebetter.org).
DDB is a non-profit group that raises awareness about dogs who are left outside, either penned or at the end of chains, never brought into the home to be part of the family. They work with families to help them integrate their dogs into their lives, or they offer to rehome dogs when the owners have no desire to love them as they deserve to be loved.
“Chain Off has been held annually around the 4th of July since 2003, highlighting the reality that while Americans are celebrating their own freedom, there are tens of thousands of Man's Best Friends in every state who are still not free: America's chained and penned dogs. These dogs are found in backyards stretching from Delaware to Alaska, from Maine to Hawaii, throughout the provinces of Canada, and in countries around the world.
Chain Off has evolved from one woman chaining herself to a doghouse in 2003 for 33 hours, to 108 people chaining themselves in 36 states and Canada during last year's 2007 Chain Off to raise awareness for chained dogs.'
If I knew Kelly, I'd have visited her to show my support. Well, if I knew her, and I if lived in or was visiting the San Diego area I'd have done that. I'm supporting her by sharing her story. Sure sitting a a beautiful beach doesn't sound so hard, but for three days chained to a dog house - that's another story. Frankly, I'm curious about potty breaks, chafing under the collar, and sun burn.
As you sit in the comfort of your home, take a moment to consider what a crazy dog person just might do in the name of animals. To help them, to plead their case, to rescue one, to save one from a life of isolation. It's pretty darned impressive.
The wonderful thing is you too can make a difference - just like Kelly does.

Re: Dogs Deserve Better Annual Chain Off
I say YEA!!!!!! Guess I'm a crazy dog person too. Our two babies live with us, eat with us, sleep with us, vacation with us and when we have to be gone for the day, we get them dog sitters to come spend the day with them. I can hear some of the people say, but I don't have that kind of money! It really doesn't take any extra money to find a dog sitter. A family member or neighbor works just fine, and your dog is more comfortable with a person they know well anyway. I'd take in every abandoned, abused or neglected dog in the world if I could! Dogs to me are one of God's most perfect creations. They are a bundle of unconditional love, and as far as I am concerned, God's best Ambassadors! I'd like to say thank you personally to each and every person who takes action or donates on behalf of animals. Every time you do, you earn yourself another gold star! Keep up the good work.

Re: Dogs Deserve Better Annual Chain Off
Tammy Grimes did the same thing along with others who chained themselves up. Tammy is the founder of DDB & was arrested for saving a dying dog. Bravo to the great people who do this to bring attention to the poor chained up dogs! I can't understand why people get dogs only to leave them chained up & ignored. I have a neighbor who ties their dog up in the yard & one night the dog was barking & they chose to ignore it, ths next day they found that someone had broken into their car & stole the radio & some other things out of it. I think God was trying to tell them something. I know I told them a few things but in a nice way trying to educate them.

Re: Dogs Deserve Better Annual Chain Off
Thank goodness for "crazy dog people!" Dogs are inherently social creatures, much like human beings; that's a fact, not an personal opinion, conviction or belief. Dogs NEED social interaction in exactly the same ways that human beings do. It is also a scientifically-proven fact that when you keep a dog penned up away from other people and other dogs, they almost inevitably become anti-social ,and some will even become downright aggressive! Call me a "crazy dog person," too, if you like, but at least I know well enough to take good care of my fur-babies, and make sure that they're properly socialised with both people and dogs!
Every dog I've ever had has been a full member of the family, entitled to a warm, comfortable bed, loving companionship and hours of play and social interaction, both with humans and with their many canine friends. I have never understood why some people think it's "okay" to get a dog, then leave it chained up outside; I try to talk sense to such people, but they just don't seem to understand that their dog NEEDS to be with them just like their children need to be with them, and that if they DON'T give their dog that kind of loving attention, it's going to become a problem animal. They never seem to heed my warnings, then eventually their dog bites someone or attacks another dog, and ends up being put down, all because they refused to warp their minds around the plain and simple fact that dogs are SOCIAL CREATURES BY NATURE!
My Tas is spoiled rotten by most standards, with his own warm and comfy bed beside the couch where I spend most of my waking hours, and with full bed-rights too, meaning he's encouraged to get in bed and snuggle whenever he feels like it. Whenever possible, I never leave home without him, except those occasions when I have to take public transit, ie: going to doctors appointments and the like. I take Tas virtually everywhere I go, and I always make plenty of time for him to meet and greet and play with other dogs we meet. The general result of this is that Tas is the most supremely social dog I've ever known, and he is extremely popular and well-liked by all his friends, human and canine alike.
He's constantly making new friends, too, every time we walk down the street; he impresses people with his excellent manners and good behaviour, usually by means of sitting right next to (and sometimes sitting right ON) their feet and gazing ever-so-lovingly into their eyes...and after all, who can resist a monstrous suck-puppy? I sometimes call him "the Frankenstein of suck-monsters," he's so sweet and loving with everyone he meets!
It's all about socialising them...really! If you take the time/make the effort to properly socialise them, virtually ANY dog can and WILL turn out just like my "Frankenstein of suck-monsters!"

Re: Dogs Deserve Better Annual Chain Off
I'm proud to be part of the crazy dog bunch. And I have the deepest respect and admiration for anybody that sticks up for any animal. Dogs are meant to be socialized, not shut out to spend their lives in cruel conditions totally alone. My own dog is my fifth child and my best friend. Reminds me of the saying "God help me to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am."

Re: Dogs Deserve Better Annual Chain Off
I am also a crazy pet person. About 6 years ago, my boyfriend and I came upon a back yard with 2 black labs that had no food, no water, no shelter, emaciated, and chained to 2 trees. The were completely forgotten and only about a week from death. We went up to the house and asked if they would be willing to let us take the dogs. They said " Yeah, take them. We don't want them anymore." We took them home and brought them in the house and they both did not seem to know how to act. I do not believe they had ever been allowed in the house before. We took them straight to the bathroom and bathed them since they were covered in ticks and fleas. We got medication for them for the ticks and fleas and within 3 days were free of the pests. The male, Coletrain, was as sweet and loving as could be despite the way he had been treated. The female. Mercedes, was not so friendly at first. She was very cautious at first. However, once she realized that she was safe and that we really cared about her she warmed up. It took about a month to get them at a somewhat decent weight. One they were healthy we found them new loving homes. Coletrain went to a family with kids where he is dearly loved and played with all the time. Mercedes went to an older woman and is spoiled rotten.
Ever since I was a child I have been bringing home sick, hurt, or abandoned cats and dogs. I have lost count of how many I have rescued. It is the most rewarding feeling to take and unwanted animal and nurse them back to health and find them new homes with people who really love them.

Re: Dogs Deserve Better Annual Chain Off
It is a shame to see any animal being chained, you can also hear them crying. Be sure to report anyone that commits this type of CRUELTY!!! All our furry friends should be treated with respect and love.

Re: Dogs Deserve Better Annual Chain Off
I will never understand why people get a dog if they don't want it to be a part of "their pack". To have a dog in the back-yard and not take care of it, defeats the purpose of having one. I try to do my part and educate people whenever I can, like NEVER buying a puppy at a pet-store!!!! I applaud people like Kelly, that take an active step to raise awareness. Whether it is a show on "Oprah" about puppy-mills, or a girl in California chaining herself to a dog-house, this is the kind of stuff that changes the world for the better.

Here in Hollywood, FL we have a law called the 'Extreme Leash law'. Domestic animals cannot be on a leash more than an hour or out in high heat days, or exteme weather either.
