| Jun 19 Written by:aajoanne Thursday, June 19, 2008 German Shepherd Harley has found his calling - lifeguard at the family pool! But this story of amazing rescue is a bit different. While none of the swimmers in the pool were in danger, Harley still jumped into the deep end to 'save' them and bring them back to the safety of the shallow water. Watch Harley and his amazing 'rescues!'

Re: Instinct at Work
I grew up with German Shephard so I know first hand the instinct they have for protection. My Mom was in a boat on the pond in front of our house. My grandfather splashed her and she yelped because she didn't expect to get wet. It was all in fun but My Hilde heard my Mom's cry and jumped in she swam all the way out to the boat and tried to pull my Mom back in. My Mom realizing the dog's intent jumped in the water and let Hilde "save" her. She was the Greatest dog! Every day she would walk me to school and every day she'd wait on the corner for me so she could walk me back home. This breed has a strong urge to protect it's family. This is a great video and what a Great dog that Harley is!

Re: Instinct at Work
I grew up with a german shepherd mix and he was the smartest dog. He easily learned tricks and followed me everywhere (back then there were no leash laws.) If he got let out and no one was home when he came back, he'd go to my uncle's house about 1/4 mile away, bark to get in and hang with my uncle till they knew someone was home and then he'd just walk home. So cute. My best friend also had a very large G.S. and her brother had Down syndrome. Sometimes this boy would torment the dog beyond belief and when he'd had enough, the dog would gently place his very large mouth around the boys wrist as if to say "knock it off" and then go hide under a bed somewhere. Intelligent, gentle and compassionate breed and Harley absolutely exhibits these traits!

Re: Instinct at Work
That was just so cool. I loved my shepherd, and I am still very sad since she passed on 1 yr. ago. I will be getting another one when the time is right.
A quick story of what my dog "Heidi"'did. My daughter had her dog over and my son and his new baby were also there. My son dove into the pool which made my daughters dog go nuts and start barking and chasing him around the pool. My dog, Heidi, went after this dog and grabbed him because he was coming by me. I was holding the new baby, and she thought this other dog was going to hurt the baby. Now my dog would never hurt anyone, but she just thought that we were going to be hurt. So I know how protective these animals can be with thier loved ones. Thank you for a great video.
