Pet PreparednessWatching the news over the weekend about the tornadoes, floods, cyclones and earthquakes across the globe, our family discussions turned to emergency preparedness.

We've got our flashlights, batteries and water, but what we realized was that we hadn't prepared well for our pets. Have you?

Take a minute to review disaster preparedness tips from the ASPCA so that you're not caught off-guard in case of an emergency. These include:

  •
  •
  • Getting a Rescue Alert Sticker
  • Arranging a Safe Haven
  • Having Emergency Supplies and Traveling Kits
  • Choosing “Designated Caregivers”

Re: Pet Preparedness

McGrit lives in Floida and we have to prepare for hurricane season starting in June and ending November 30th. To be sure that McGrit has an adequate water supply during an emergency and won't get an upset system due to water changes, she is drinking bottled water all year round. The water comes from a source that is nationwide and we will be able to buy it if we have to evacuate to another area, state, etc. The same process for food. She eats dry kibble for breakfast and a mixture of dry kibble and organic chicken and brown rice for dinner. Another important piece of emergency gear for McGrit is grabbing one of her beds and towels, plus a few toys. Then we are on our way.

Re: Pet Preparedness

I lived in New Orleans and you know what happen with Katrina. I am prepare to leave with all three of my dogs. Bam Bam, Izzy and MiMi. One is 7lbs, one is 11lbs and one is 83lbs. My car will fit there supplies and me. I also give them purified water. I also have two water proof food container. This time I will not leave without there shots records, Frontline and Heartguard. Izzy is diabete and the insulin must stay cold. Her diabete food once open needs to be refrigerated. I love them and will never leave them.

Re: Pet Preparedness

I volunteer with an organization known as United Animal Nations Emergency Animal Rescue Service. UAN-EARS helped out with the Katrina disaster (though not me personally). Please do a search for their site - they have lots of disaster preparedness information. One of their best tips is to bring along a photo of -- not just your pet -- but a photo of you and your pet together. This helps with ownership issues if you get separated.

Re: Pet Preparedness

Living in Southeast Texas, I make sure we are always prepared...especially June-November! (That made for a much easier evac for Hurricane Rita...for us and the dogs and cats!) I have a tool box that I use as my "Pet Preparedness Kit". It contains extra collars and leashes, cat & dog treats (rotated out on a regular basis), first aide kit, medicines, tennis balls, chews, and cat toys, current pictures of each pet with us, vet records, etc. I also keep my dog & cat food in portable plastic containers that can be grabbed quickly, and I always have a large supply of water for us and the dogs and cats. (We already drink bottled water, I just make sure that there is extra.) Each carrier has a tag with our home info, vet info, and the info of the family member we are evacuating to and it has a current picture of the pet on the other side. (The crates are also permanently marked with the pets name and our information, just in case.) I may be overprepared, but I don't care! I want to make sure that we and my furbabies are safe and provided for in an emergency. Better safe than sorry! (Hope & prayers for a VERY CALM hurricane season for everyone!) Thanks for bringing up this topic! It will remind people that they need to get prepared if they aren't already!!!
