Many years ago I took Abby-the-Labby to a Blessing of the Animals. I can still remember the minister who administered a special blessing on her. Mind you, as a young lab, she needed all the extra blessings she could get. He said, "may your ears always be open to your master's voice, and may you never bite the hand that feeds you". I thought that blessing was sheer genius, no doubt he'd owned a dog or two himself (perhaps a Lab).

Today, Mick and I visited an elderly minister who was in the hospital. He was a chatty as they come, so I sat and listened for a good while. I heard about his life when he was a "bad boy" as he put it. And his life after he was saved. He told me how music and song was a part of his youth, how those pleasures were denied him at one point in life, and how he found his way back to them. He sang me a song. He did not miss his calling as a singer, but he found his calling as a preacher.

As the visit grew long, he was going to sing another song, but I asked instead for a blessing on my dog. He gladly complied and I am certain that Mick was as moved by the Holy Spirit, as I was the old preacher. At least Mick endured the blessing with grace even if it fell on dog ears. And while this minister was not as eloquent, he was just as sincere. That counts for a lot.

Here is my take on it, one can never have too many blessings. It is my hope, our visit blessed this man in some small way as much as his blessing touched us in a big way.
