English Springer SpanielThere are the usual things they bring in, balls, bones, kongs, a stick or two. There were a few birds too, once in a while. They drag in lots of mud on the muddy paw days. They drag us out and in, and in and out.

Maddie, who is a very small English Springer Spaniel, brings us rocks. Either they are the ones that fall out of her head, or they are ones swiped from the landscaping. Heck, she'll fish them out of the lake if she can! It's not all that strange to find several on the carpet. She is a retrieving fool if there ever was one.

Today, she found a croquet ball that was previously in residence in my compost pile. Yes, I realize they do not decompose very well. To be honest neither did the soda can, or the plastic plant identification tags. But that's another story.

The croquet ball was a huge find for Maddie. She retrieved it over and over, my only fear was hitting her in the melon (head) with it as I tend to throw like a girl sometimes, or her trying to catch it mid air.

Last I saw the ball it was sitting in the middle of the water bowl. I am concerned she'll take it up and drop it into the toilet like she does with the tennis balls. I still do not relish fishing anything out of the toilet. As a responsible dog owner I'll hide the croquet ball, because really it's not the best toy for her. It was fun while it lasted, but it will disappear just like the rocks that go back out to the garden.

I guess we are lucky she hasn't found a bowling ball and rolled it down the stairs. But then again, just cause it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't happen.

And truthfully, having a retriever around is a nice change from having all pointers. They may stand, point and look awesome. But awesome doesn't fetch it up (and drag it in) like Miss Maddie does.

Re: Things The Dog Dragged In

My chihuahua taught herself and me to play fetch very early on. She also likes to pick up anything and everything. She constantly looks up at me and I have to pull things off her nose or out of her mouth. It's so cute though...

Re: Things The Dog Dragged In

your dog is incretible cute! and the fact that the dog brings in rocks is no surprise my old friend has a dog nammed tanner and he is a big shaggy golden retriever and when i am around or even when i am not my friend hates that he brings in rocks in the house me i dont mind it hes so cute! but his family dosent like it so when he has a rock before he drops it in the house (insted of throwing it like tanner wants him to) he simply takes him outside and keeps him there until the rock is out of his month and on the floor.then once its gone he lets him in and gives him a treat for droping the rock now my friends says this process takes a while but it does work so try it and then you wont have to deal with those peskey rocks anymore!:)

Have you tried a raquet ball yet? My Rott loved those! they go forever and he couldnt pop them as fast as a tennis ball.
Have a great summer together
Take care

Re: Things The Dog Dragged In

I have a friend who's dog would fish rocks out. Her teeth were very short because of it. Be careful!

I would have to agree as to the pointer vs a retriever, as I have both as well. My silly Emma lab mix had a 'thing' for Osage Apples. She would go out of her way to find one & carry it around forever, looking for the just the right place to bury it, then turn around & go find another one. She buried most of her finds, but frequently brought them home. She always made me laugh when I saw her w/one as they can get pretty big, like grapefruit size, and she'd just proudly carry it around, like a prize, only to find a bigger one & watch her struggle w/which one was better to keep & omg what if the other dogs should see it & want it-not that either of them had the least interest in it, but in her doggie mind it was quite the big deal. Wouldn't trade her foir the world!

Re: Things The Dog Dragged In

We also had a spaniel who loved to bring home rocks when I was growing up! She was my first pet and what was really hilarious this behavior drove my mom crazy leading to one of those crazy spouse conversations between her and my dad - she'd complain, "Dick (yes my dad's nae was Richard and back in the early 60's you could get away with a nickname like that) - why did you have to get a dog that brings home rocks. What am I supposed to do with these d--- things? and ya da ya da ya da... What was interesting was our spaniel would hide all of her rocks (all relatively the same size under the couch like she had a den and they were her babes! lol....
