Help us spread the word about the wonderful gift Matt and Kelly are giving to dogs suffering from cancer!
So, what are we doing? Well, running a marathon has been a goal of ours for some time. After making the commitment to train for putting our bodies through agony, we were left with two questions: where to run, and what to run for. We chose Alaska because it had always been on our “must visit” list. We’re going to spend six days after the race taking in the sights of this beautiful place. We chose the National Canine Cancer Foundation because we have been seared by the pain that losing a dog causes. Last year, we lost our first dog, Anfield, to a very aggressive form of canine cancer. It took only 16 days from the initial diagnosis to the day we had to put him to sleep (click on the video and photos to the left to see what a sweet dog he was). This is a pivotal time in cancer research for dogs. The entire genome of the dog has been mapped; this is going to open up new research and new ways of thinking. Perhaps most importantly, scientists believe that finding a cure for canine cancer will lead to finding a similar cure for people. As we have both lost loved family members to the disease, this is very important to us. Since undertaking the decision to raise money for this cause, we have learned that dogs get cancer at the same rate as humans, which make them ideal candidates to study to help find a cure for people. Sadly, we also learned that canine cancer takes the lives of 50 percent of all dogs over the age of 10 – and many, many more under 10 (Anfield was only seven). We hope this information helps you to make an educated decision about your donation. If you would like to learn more about the National Canine Cancer Foundation, please visit www.wearethecure.org. Re: Running for Our Pups
I am sorry for your lose but I know how you feel. I lost my wonderful girl who was a Rottweiler a few years ago and it still hurts to this day. She was awesome and I loved her so much so got bone cancer which I did not know that Rotties were very prone to.
I wish you the best of luck. May God be by your side.

Re: Running for Our Pups
I feel for your loss, it is never easy to lose one of the family regardless of whether they have 2 or 4 legs, they are still family. Anfield looked as though he was a great dog and a wonderful companion, Isis must miss him terribly. She is a brave dog and will be able to go on for him. I wish you folks the very best of luck & be careful in Alaska(I hear those mosquitos get the size of a small airplane). I hope that someday with the money you and others like you raise & wil raise will eventually eliminate this disease. For Anfield...GO!

Re: Running for Our Pups
Raise your paw if you plan to donate! Being a Boxer lover myself and having the pleasure to meet Anfield in person, I know how much this organization means.
Best of luck with your fundraising endeavors.

Re: Running for Our Pups
I'm so sorry to hear about Anfield. I also lost my sweet Adam to an aggresive form of cancer that was called Humengiancarcoma(spelling??). It was about 3 weeks after his diagnosis that I lost him. You're a wonderful example of making a positive difference out of an adverse situation. Best.

Re: Running for Our Pups
We lost our boy Rott/Lab mix "Ranger" to cancer last year and I still can't seem to get over him. He was our baby and we had a real connection with him -- he was the sweetest, big baby! I don't think I will ever forget him and hope some day I will see him again (I just want to hug him and tell him how much I love him). Good luck with your mission I can only hope and pray there will be a cure one day so that so many will not have to feel this way too soon. I am sorry for your loss, thank you for trying to make a difference for our loved ones.

Re: Running for Our Pups
What a cutie Anfield was! I'm sorry to hear about your loss & your friend's loss as well. One day you'll be together again & until you are, God and all the other critters waiting for their moms & dads, are taking care of each other. Thank you for posting the website too. I am very interested in this. You will absolutely love Alaska. It's beautiful! I hope you all have a great time while you're there.

Re: Running for Our Pups
We lost our Rottie "Jeeves" to lymphoma last month. He was only 5 years old. I notice several people posting here also lost rotts and rott mixes. It sure seems like Pitts, Rotts, and other broad-faced dogs have such bad luck! Anyway, thank you for your fundraising effort and also for bringing attention to this terrible illness that claims so many lives. Thank you, too, for the link.

Re: Running for Our Pups
Bless you!!! So sorry for your loss of a family member!
My Brandi is a survivor of hemangiosarcoma. Luckily, if you want to call a blown knee lucky, she blew her knee out so I had her in getting that repaired when the dark spot in her hip bone was found. They ran biopsies and being the cancer is aggressive they said to amputate and 5 rounds of two kinds of chemo and even then her prognosis was only 3-4 months. It has been 22 months since diagnosis, 19 since amputation and all three checkups have not shown any signs of cancer on her organs. We may have found it soon enough but only because she blew out her knee. She is happy and healthy and still beats up on her brother (in a playful way).
But I did lose my male Rott to cancer. He was only 8, never a problem until one day his tummy was extended. By that time the tumor was too big to operate on so he got to live his last few months as a king (not that he wasn't spoiled but he got extra spoiled).
Bless you again and the best of luck!!!!

Re: Running for Our Pups
I just lost my Best Friend Harley, an absolutely fantastic Rott. He developed osteo sarcoma in his right distal femur.
Reading all these comments makes me wonder why this beautiful animal is not being researched more throughly to find out why.
My heart has a hole that will never be filled. I have adopted another Rottie and she is helping with the pain. It's just so damn sad. I understand the univ of Pa. vet school is doing some research, but it is hard to find much about it.
Harley was turning 7.
So sorry for all of you who are going through this devestation.
