I didn't think he was breathing as he lay helpless and motionless on the side of the road. We were not driving in a safe part of downtown and as I turned my head slightly to the side I saw a large pack of kids coming towards the lifeless white cat, carrying large poles and sticks. I was horrified.

One of my favorite dog-loving friends gave me a book the other day. She likened it to a "coffee table" book. You know those huge over sized books that we sometimes purchase to make our coffee table look good, but rarely actually open? The title of this book is.... Flawed Dogs....the author is Berkeley Breathed. My friend lovingly inscribed the book to Nancy and her dog menagerie.

Again, pets and travel. When flying, pets are indeed kept in the cargo hold of the airplane. While the Safe Air Travel for Animals Act has taken pet safety during travel to the forefront, many animals have been injured or died in the cargo holds of planes. Some airlines will allow smaller, quieter pets (if kept in a carrier) to be placed under the seat or on the seat next to a passenger. Airlines can also charge for this ability, but it is the safest way to fly with a pet.

Today's lesson on exposure took us to a fund raiser for another dog rescue program. This particular event benefited Boston Terriers. It said all dogs were welcome, so I figured what the heck. For a foster learning about life and fine tuning social skills it was just the ticket.

One of the things a foster home does for a dog is to expose him/her to lots of new situations, people, things, environments, activities. I had a prospective adopter ask about Pete's response to loud noises, sirens, etc.

We recently made some enhancements to our search and I must say, I'm having so much fun playing with the Pet Search and looking at all of your super cute furbabies!
Have a look around yourself -- now you can not only find pet parents in your area, but also those with a particular breed. Or, you can look for the pets themselves!

Dan recently commented that he didn't know how he could ever work for someone else - what would he do with Buddy during the day???
At AnimalAttraction we're so fortunate to be able to have our pets with us every day -- and it looks like more and more workers are able to do the

This blog could be called "Thanks....But I'll Wait" or "I'm a Momma's Boy". And it could be written by Kobe instead of me.
He is the ultimate Momma's boy. He escorts me everywhere I go. If it's feeding time and both of us are dishing and serving, Kobe won't eat his unless I put the b

I've discovered one of the dogs has a tendency to be a pack rat. Uh, huh, even a dog can hoard things.
This dog, who shall remain nameless, to protect the devious, is an English Springer Spaniel. She has a sweet lit

Watching the news over the weekend about the tornadoes, floods, cyclones and earthquakes across the globe, our family discussions turned to emergency preparedness.
We've got our flashlights, batteries and water, but what we realized was that we hadn't prepared well for our pets. Have you?

I once read to write about what you know, so for me, it must be dogs. They are just the best part of my life, well besides my sweetheart, wine, chocolate, my kids, flowers, and cheese (in no specific order).
People who aren't animal lovers don't get it, and I find that sad. I don't mind the fur, the wet noses, the balls on the stairs.

With fostering and rescue it's much like baseball. The game isn't over until the Fat Lady Sings. Sure things, are sometimes not as sure as one would expect. We thought Pete had a great home lined up in Omaha. But then, as sometimes happens, the prospective adopter faded into the sunset. Next the potential adopter in Minnesota sounded great. And they are, but at the last minute they went with a local dog needing a home.

Fancy liked my shoes. Fancy was my daughters doberman. She liked to take my shoes from the closet, or where ever I stepped out of them. Not both shoes, just one. And she liked to bury that shoe under her blanket.
Of course, she stands on the blanket, then tries to move the blanket (with her nose) enou

Many years ago I took Abby-the-Labby to a Blessing of the Animals. I can still remember the minister who administered a special blessing on her. Mind you, as a young lab, she needed all the extra blessings she could get.
He said, "may your ears always be open to your master's voice, and may you never bite the hand that feeds you". I thought that blessing was sheer genius, no doubt he'd owned a dog or two him

Training. What is acceptable in training and what can be deemed abuse? A tap on the nose? A loud yell? Shock collars? Any form of discipline can technically be called abuse, but the line is definitely crossed when a trainer goes from strict handling to completely out of control.

It's another sad tale of pets abandoned in the wake of a natural disaster. This time we turn our attention to Chile where the town of Chaiten is covered in volcanic ash and pets are struggling to survive without their owners.

A horse, running for the sake of running and because that’s all she’s ever known, crosses the finish line as fast as she can. She’s done. She did well. She can stop now. But what some are calling her genetically-weakened ankles aren’t up for it. They both snap. She goes down.

There are the usual things they bring in, balls, bones, kongs, a stick or two. There were a few birds too, once in a while. They drag in lots of mud on the muddy paw days. They drag us out and in, and in and out.
Maddie, who is a very small English Springer Spaniel, brings us rocks. Either they are the ones that fall out of her head, or they are ones swiped from the landscaping. Heck, she'll fish them
